Racism is fine on our site, says Reddit’s chief executive Steve Huffman

Open racism including racial slurs are permitted on Reddit, the social media company’s president Steve Huffman has said.

In the comment section for the business’s 2017 transparency report, Mr Huffman composed that Reddit’s “method to governance is that neighborhoods can set proper standards around language on their own”.

Posting under his username ‘spez’, Mr Huffman composed: “On Reddit, the way in which we think about speech is to separate behaviour from beliefs.

” This implies on Reddit there will be people with beliefs various from your very own, in some cases incredibly so.

” When users’ actions dispute with our content policies, we take action.”

The news aggregation and social media website has been embroiled in a number of scandals considering that it was established in 2005.

In 2011, the site was forced to close down a neighborhood dedicated to sharing sexualised pictures of teens called “Jailbait”.

This was followed by bans on neighborhoods called “CreepShots”, which gathered sexualised pictures of women taken without their permission, “Beatingwomen” and “FatPeopleHate”.

Other questionable communities, consisting of “The_Donald”, have remained offered on the website, in spite of accusations that they have prompted violence, significantly the white supremacist rally in Charlottesville.

Reddit was wased established by Mr Huffman and Alexis Ohanian, who last November married Wimbledon champ Serena Williams in an extravagant ceremony just 11 weeks after she gave birth.

Mr Huffman replaced Ellen Pao as chief executive in 2015 following an outcry among the website’s users over Ms Pao’s handling of the dismissal of a popular worker.
