Surface Duo With Two 5.6-Inch Screens Is Microsoft’s Latest Attempt at Smartphone Market

Microsoft on Wednesday unveiled new Surface devices with twin-screens that open like books, consisting of a notepad-sized variation that will put it back in the mobile phone game next year. Surface Duo was touted as the very first device in the lineup to suit a trousers pocket, with two “paper-thin” 5.6-inch screens that unfold and work in consistency with a specifically customized Android operating system.

Described as a “new category” of device, Duo can make telephone calls and run applications created for Google-backed Android mobile software application, which powers most of the world’s smart devices.

” You are going to talk about it as a phone, and I get that,” Microsoft chief product officer Panos Panay stated at a Surface occasion in New York of Duo, which will be available late next year.

” You can text; you can compose; you can do what you desire, make no error this product is a Surface.”

The Duo and a separate collapsible Neo tablet came as a surprise at a New York occasion where the tech titan unveiled its latest lineup of Surface computing gadgets.

Microsoft years earlier gave up the smart device market to operating systems from Apple and Google after its own line of Windows-powered handsets stopped working to gain traction.

While it has been highlighting its cloud computing and other company services, Microsoft still draws substantial revenue from Windows, the software application that powers the large bulk of PCs.

Mobile phones and tablets tuned to Microsoft’s subscription-based, cloud-hosted applications work into the company’s effective shift away from relying on packaged software.

Microsoft has attained strong development from its cloud services and incomes from its Xbox video gaming service, Bing search, Surface tablets and PCs, as well as the expert social media network LinkedIn acquired in 2016.

As its Windows cellphone service had a hard time to get traction, Microsoft acquired the device organisation of Finland-based Nokia in 2014 for some $7.2 as part of a reboot effort.

But that stopped working and Microsoft eventually threw in the towel on its Windows mobile operating system which failed to get a foothold in the sector dominated by Apple’s iOS and Google’s Android.

” I believe the 3rd time’s a beauty for Microsoft and smartphones as conditions for a Surface smartphone’s success have turned in favor of the business,” said analyst Patrick Moorhead of Moor Insights & Strategy.

” The timing is right, too, as it’ll take a new and radical collapsible design to wake buyers from their ‘good enough’ rest.”

Microsoft argued that structure on the Android mobile os provides an excellent foundation for Duo and can assist replace bigger gadgets such as tablets and laptop computers in a lot of cases.

“We wanted to develop experiences that span all devices in our lives,” Microsoft chief executive Satya Nadella stated at the Surface event.

At the occasion on Wednesday, the US technology titan revealed a Neo dual-screen, foldable version of its complete Surface tablet, which like the Duo will be release late next year.

Microsoft likewise unveiled brand-new Surface laptops and earbuds to strike the marketplace in time for the year-end holiday shopping season this year.
